Community Development
The University of Chicago plays a key role in several community-based partnerships that focus on redeveloping the neighborhood's retail districts, parks, and public facilities. In addition, the University leverages its own properties in support of a vibrant community. For example:
- The historic Checkerboard Lounge has relocated to University-owned property in Harper Court, where it serves as an anchor for a new entertainment district.
- Thousands of new trees, shrubs, and flowers beautify our neighborhoods each year through University-supported community improvement projects. Neighborhood Enhancement Grants help increase the physical attractiveness of the community.
- The New Communities Program, with significant University involvement, involves local residents in the creation of strategies to improve the quality of life in Woodlawn.
- Retail development efforts include working with city agencies and community groups to revitalize the 53rd Street retail district.
- The University uses its real estate holdings to promote improvements in the community.
