Community Development & Housing

As an engaged neighbor, the University is a responsible partner in neighborhood planning and redevelopment. The University works with the City of Chicago, the South East Chicago Commission, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the Community Investment Corporation (CIC), and other community-based organizations to improve housing, retail, parks, and public facilities for the benefit of all.

The Midway Plaisance Master Plan was one such effort. The University partnered with the Chicago Park District to bring a skating rink, a horticultural center, and other civic enhancements to the Midway.

The University also helps maintain a strong base of high-quality, affordable housing for our students, staff, and neighbors. In fact, the University operates some 2,000 rental units on the mid–South Side. Additionally, our Employer-Assisted Housing Program encourages employees to purchase houses in the community.
