Support for Teachers
Strong schools start with strong teachers. The University offers training, professional seminars, classroom support, and materials to help teachers expand their horizons, build their skills, and renew their enthusiasm. For example:
- The New Teachers Network provides development and support to novice teachers in high-need Chicago public schools.
- The Polk Bros. University of Chicago Math Teachers Program offers intensive summer sessions on teaching math for teachers of kindergarten through eighth grade.
- The Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Seminar Program for Teachers combines four-week seminars, hands-on labs, and presentations for high school biology teachers.
- The School Development Program of the Center for Urban School Improvement provides individualized coaching for leaders of South Side public schools. It also implements technology-based literacy assessments in partnership with Chicago Public Schools.
- The Urban Teacher Education Program immerses University undergraduates in urban school experiences as a complement to their academic preparation for certification as public school teachers.
