Economic Impact
With more than 13,000 employees and 13,600 students, the University of Chicago and University of Chicago Hospitals are an economic engine with significant local impact.
Institutional purchasing power, together with the expenditures of our staff, faculty, and students, adds $2 billion to the regional economy, helping local businesses to thrive.
The University spends hundreds of millions of dollars locally on construction spending, renovation, and building maintenance. Since 1999, the University itself has spent $465 million to build new facilities on the main campus, while the Hospitals devoted more than $225 million to the new state-of-the-art University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital and other projects.
