Retail Development

For more than half a century, the University of Chicago has been an important participant in the development of retail opportunities in the community.

Today, the University's commitment to a vibrant commercial life remains strong. For example, the University made it possible for the historic Checkerboard Lounge to relocate in Harper Court, where it serves as an anchor for a new entertainment district.

A University partnership with the city and the 4th and 5th ward aldermen has led to major improvements to the main commercial areas of the community. New lighting, landscaping, and repaving attract new business enterprises to the area.

The revitalization of the 55th and 53rd Street retail districts were key projects involving the University, city agencies, and community groups. In addition, the University provided a loan guarantee for the Lake Park Plaza shopping center at 47th Street and Lake Park Avenue.

The Seven Ten Lanes restaurant and bowling alley in the Ellis Avenue Parking Structure is a welcome addition to the Hyde Park scene that was made possible by opportunities for private retail within new or existing campus buildings.

Retail development will play a large role in the University's South Campus planning as well. In response to community needs, the University has added plans for small convenience retail in its new building at 61st and Woodlawn.
