Religious Life

The founders of the University of Chicago knew that a healthy spirit contributes to a healthy mind and body. That's why they created Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, the magnificent cathedral-like edifice at 57th and Woodlawn.

People of all faiths gather at Rockefeller to pray, worship, and attend special events. Weddings, concerts, and community celebrations happen here. High schools from all over the South Side hold graduation ceremonies here. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Elie Wiesel, and Bishop Desmond Tutu have spoken from its pulpit.

Each year the chapel hosts an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service that brings together University and community members of all faiths for a celebration of thanks. And children from across the community participate in the candlelight service on Christmas Eve.

Rockefeller Chapel also serves as the University's liaison with campus ministries and student-run organization representing an extraordinary number of faiths.
